Every Step Forward: Gracelynn’s Story

When Gracelynn Johnson began therapy at Joe’s Kids, she was still very small and learning the basics of movement. Diagnosed with torticollis, Gracelynn had difficulty holding her head up, sitting independently, and moving comfortably as her body grew. Tightness and weakness in her neck made early milestones like rolling, crawling, standing, and walking more challenging.

As Gracelynn spent time watching her brothers—especially her twin—it was clear she wanted to be part of the action around her. While she couldn’t yet say how she felt, her determination showed in the way she worked to move, explore, and engage with her surroundings.

At Joe’s Kids, Gracelynn’s therapy focused on gently building strength, balance, and confidence through play‑based, individualized care. Each session supported her development at her own pace, while celebrating every small gain along the way.

Those moments added up.

Leah, Gracelynn’s Physical Therapist, remembers one especially sweet milestone: “The first time Gracelynn stood independently for an extended time, she was in the hallway watching other kids walk by. She had a huge smile on her face the entire time.”

Soon after, Gracelynn took her first independent steps.

“Watching her take her first few steps without any assistance, you could just see how proud she was of herself,” her mom, Tara, shared. “She fell down, and instead of crawling, she kept getting back up and trying again.”
